Animal hoarding case study

Short essay description
Crowded, cramped, horrendous, filthy, deplorable. Animal welfare organizations, including Animal Humane Society, may use these words when describing cases of animal hoarding. Photos support these descriptions, leaving viewers horrified at the conditions in which animals, and often humans, lived. The general public might dismiss hoarding as malicious, villainous, even evil — but hoarding is rarely these things. When we acknowledge hoarding as a psychiatric illness, treatment can be more effective and the pattern is less likely to be repeated — which benefits the animals we all care for. Those standards include nutrition, sanitation, shelter, veterinary care, and socialization.

Hoarding is one of the most egregious forms of animal cruelty, affecting tens of thousands of animals — mostly cats and dogs — in communities nationwide. Hoarders keep abnormally large numbers of animals for whom they do not provide even the most basic care. Animal victims of hoarders typically suffer horribly as a result, and, unlike most other forms of companion animal cruelty, their misery can go on for years.

They came from concerned animal lovers, rescue groups and families who wanted a rabbit, mouse or duck, taken from the ramshackle residence of Roger Blew in Drakesville last month. From our view, it went beyond the ability of this guy to care for the animals. Blew's arrest has prompted questions about animal hoarding in a state with huge volumes of confined animals, a steady schedule of animal swap meets and numerous online postings from Iowans selling everything from zebras to woodchucks.

Objective: The objective of this study was to better characterize the problem of hoarding, or pathological collecting, of animals. Methods: The author summarized data from a convenience sample of 54 case reports from 10 animal control agencies and humane societies across the country. About half of the hoarders lived in single-person households. The animals most frequently involved were cats, dogs, farm animals, and birds. The median number of animals per case was 39, but there were four cases of more than animals in a household.
