Short essay description
Writing is not a skill that students learn separate from other processes. It combines many complex activities, including categorizing, building key terms and concepts for a subject, measuring one's reaction to a subject, making new connections, abstracting, figuring out significance, and developing arguments—to name a few. Our highest cognitive functions are developed and supported through active and interconnected use of language—speaking, listening, reading, and writing. In practice, this means that reading and speaking and listening can be used as a springboard for writing projects, and writing can be used as a way to understand reading. A variety of informal, often ungraded, writing activities may be used, for instance, to help students understand that critical reading can be practiced through writing about reading and that writing projects can be strengthened through careful, critical reading. Classroom practices can be designed so that students use writing to read and reading to write.

Academic language is a meta-language that helps learners acquire the 50, words they are expected to have internalized by the end of high school and includes everything from illustration and chart literacy to speaking, grammar, and genres within fields. Think of academic language as the verbal clothing that we don in classrooms and other formal contexts to demonstrate cognition within cultures and to signal college readiness. No student comes to school adept in academic discourse—thus, thoughtful instruction is required. It would be a mistake to think that academic language is a garbage pail category involving any word, depending on the context. Banana daiquiri is a term that most first graders cannot define, but it is not an example of academic language.

The mission of the ESL component of the Writing Program is to help non-native speakers achieve college-level proficiency in English speaking, reading, and writing. The ESL course sequence teaches students to read critically, speak articulately, and write effectively. The seminars place an emphasis on the structure of language as a basis for effective analytical writing. Students examine cultural differences in strategies for classroom discourse and learn the rhetorical conventions of academic English.

I`m not a fan of such services (thanks to my negative experience) but they submitted the paper 1 day before the deadline, and I`ve found just a couple of style mistakes in it!
