Of mice and men essay lennie and george

Short essay description
The most telling statement from both men about their friendship is the one they repeat as part of their ritual. As Lennie and George go over the shape of their dream and plan for the future, they repeatedly define their friendship by saying that they are not like the other traveling workers. For Crooks, the little farm will be a place where he can have self-respect, acceptance, and security. For each man George, Lennie, Candy, and Crooks human dignity is an integral part of the dream. Having and sharing the dream, however, are not enough to bring it to fruition. Each man must make a sacrifice or battle some other force that seeks, intentionally or not, to steal the dream away.

A while back Candy got his hand caught in a machine, so now he sees and old disabled man who will be thrown off the ranch as soon as he is no longer able to swamp the bunkhouse. Candy knows that he is not much use to the farm. When George and Lennie were talking about the house they were dreaming of getting, Candy saw the opportunity to join their dream.

I’ve enjoyed this course the most so far (having completed Craft of Plot and Character), perhaps it’s due to a general improvement in my writing through the skills I’ve alredy gained, but I really felt these particular modules were very good and really challenged my imagination.
